Hearing your toddler cry out of fear is unsettling, to say the least. But these moms say it’s worth it because their children are learning to save their own lives.
In this video, hear from a handful of mothers who take their children to the YMCA’s Carol Elizabeth Kennedy Pool in Tampa, Fla., for Infant Swimming Resource, or ISR, classes. CrossFit Kids recently teamed with the 46-year-old program to help prevent accidental drowning.
“Regardless of how much tension and anxiety I feel, it doesn’t outweigh the rewards of him learning how to save his life,” Monica Mirza says as she holds her son.
Drowning for children under the age of 4 is the No. 1 cause of accidental death in the U.S., says ISR founder Harvey Barnett.
“The sole existence of Infant Swimming Resource is to keep a baby safer in and around the water and to educate the families so that we have created a comprehensive drowning-prevention strategy,” he explains. “Supervision by itself is not going to be the scenario that will save the child from drowning.”
