5:45 Ben Abruzzo is the co-owner of CrossFit Albuquerque, but he’s also raising awareness and money to help find a cure for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Ben explained a little about this deadly and relatively unknown disease, and he talked about a WOD he’s organizing in hopes that affiliates and CrossFitters will complete the WOD and donate money on Aug. 28. The WOD is in memory of Ben’s son “Bugaboo,” who lost his battle with SMA in 2005. Ben talked about the website where people can get more information and even donate to the cause.
16:50 Pam Robles and Dave Lombardo came on the show to give an after-action report on the CrossFit event that was part of the California Firefighters Summer Olympics. They explained how the event went smoothly with the help of Jason Khalipa and other experienced trainers, and Dave gave a rundown of the individual competition that consisted of four WODs. He listed the top three finishers in both the men’s and women’s divisions, and he did the same for the team competition that took place the day after the individual event.
44:15 Rick Adams is the CEO of USA Weightlifting and has put together the USA Weightlifting/CrossFit Open Event that will take place in early October. Rick explained how this event took shape from its first conception to sitting down with Dave Castro and Mike Burgener in order to plan it. Rick explained how the format of the event will go and what the actual competition will be. He talked about the intriguing idea of Oly lifters adding a CrossFit WOD to their competition and CrossFitters adding an official Olympic lifting competition to their WOD. Rick also explained what’s on the horizon for the United States when it comes to international weightlifting competitions.
