On Episode 311 of CrossFit Radio, host Justin Judkins interviewed CrossFit City Line owner and Level 1 Seminar Staff member Mat Frankel, as well as Matt Biggs, who owns Sandia CrossFit. This episode was webcast on Jan. 1, 2014.
2:00 Mat Frankel of CrossFit City Line spoke briefly about his diverse athletic background, which includes playing Division 1 football, competing in the Affiliate Cup at the CrossFit Games and running in the 2013 Boston Marathon. Frankel described what it was like when the bombs exploded near the finish line, killing three and injuring more than 250 others. He went on to describe some common coaching mistakes and how to correct them, and he explained how it’s important to scale workouts appropriately for each athlete. He also offered advice to new coaches just starting out after getting their Level 1 Certificates.
17:22 The atmosphere at Sandia CrossFit in Albuquerque, N.M., is lighthearted and humorous, with a small dose of sarcasm thrown in. Owner Matt Biggs strives to create that culture by hiring the right coaches but also by including funny one-liners on the gym’s website. It’s all part of building his brand. Many affiliates have experimented with coupon programs, and Biggs detailed the positives and the negatives of programs such as Groupon. Finally, he described some of the other things Sandia CrossFit does, including mobility and yoga classes.
