There have been four competitions at CrossFit 707 in Benicia, Calif. Rosemary Matossian has participated in all of them.
The 69-year-old started CrossFit two years ago, following the lead of her son—CrossFit HQ video journalist Sevan Matossian.
“So in the beginning I only went twice a week, sometimes less. I had to force myself to go. And then a couple months ago, I started going three times a week,” she tells her son as he films her. “And now I’m not so stressed about going to the workouts, and I actually look forward to them.”
At first, Rosemary was intimidated by thoughts of not being able to do the workouts or that she might hurt herself. Those concerns subsided as she came to understand how CrossFit can be scaled to meet the needs of each athlete.
“It’s good for anybody, at any age,” she says.
And she loves the camaraderie, the friendliness and the support.
“You never feel like you’re different ’cause you’re older. Everybody is very, very encouraging. They treat you like one of the regulars—not like you’re the old person.”
