Derek Hutchison: Maximum Warrior

Some know him as a coach, some as “the man in the short shorts.” Others know him as the winner of the fourth season of Maximum Warrior, a reality-TV competition for people with military experience.

Derek Hutchison, owner of CrossFit Coeur D’Alene in Idaho, is a man of many talents. Among them is his “modeling” in his affiliate’s video It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, celebrating this year’s CrossFit Games Open. In it he wore military-issued swimming trunks that are somewhere between offensive and hilarious.

Hutchison is a retired Marine who also did diplomatic security overseas for the U.S. Department of State. Later, in 2008, he opened CrossFit Coeur D’Alene. The affiliate was the second in Idaho at the time.

“We just try to have fun,” Hutchison explains.

If members arrive in a bad mood, he wants them to walk out in a good one.

“We really want it to be the best hour of their day,” he says.

The 32-year-old also starred on Maximum Warrior 4—and won. The show throws a variety of tests at military specialists, including shooting, driving, climbing and scenario-based challenges.

“It was honor to be the first Marine to win the show,” Hutchison says. “My experiences with training CrossFit—that gave me a huge edge with every single thing we did there.”
