HQ Seminar Staff member Joe DeGain is also the owner of 810 CrossFit in Grand Blanc, Mich. In this video he shows off his pride and joy: his CrossFit box.

The gym incorporates some interesting features in addition to conventional CrossFit equipment. Instead of chalk or whiteboard markings, his athletes use poker chips to keep track of workout rounds. And instead of PVC pipes, his athletes use wooden dowels so they can apply bands and weight to the ends for balance work.

CrossFit 810 also has a Rogue Infinity pull-up structure with detachable pull-up bars and detachable dip racks for movement progressions. Long, detachable pins also add to the versatility by allowing the use of bands in the racks.

Another interesting feature are the box’s ropes, including two knotted ropes.

“I think they’re very, very beneficial, especially for people who are afraid,” DeGain says. “It’s a great way to teach them how to use their legs, how to stand up on a knot, and how to have the courage to get up there with the height that’s involved before they move on to the unknotted ropes.”

The floor is painted with 12 logos on wooden platforms to organize a class when lifting. DeGain says he made sure the platforms were flush with the mats so the athletes could run in and out of the gym space without tripping.

DeGain programs a week of workouts and writes them on the board. Another board holds the benchmarks for classic workouts, endurance events, and powerlifting and Olympic lifting.

“These are really, really important to us … because whenever we do strength work, we work off of percentages,” he says.
