Be Your Own Bodyguard Part 8: Elbow and Knee Strikes

In this series, get a sneak peak at Tony Blauer’s Be Your Own Bodyguard seminar hosted by San Francisco CrossFit. Blauer, founder of Blauer Tactical Systems, has been providing seminars to CrossFitters to teach the basics of self-defense and how to implement them through CrossFit.

In Part 8, Blauer talks about elbow and knee strikes. He likens the elbow strike to reaching across your body to grab your seatbelt and put it on.

“Always follow through like you’re reaching for your seatbelt because that elbow comin’ across somebody will open somebody up, and that’s a good thing, as graphic and brutal as that might sound,” Blauer says. “Remember the indignation thing. This isn’t fuckin’ around with a co-worker at work who used your coffee mug. … This is a serious situation.”

Next up are knee strikes, which he compares with resting your foot on something to tie your shoe.

“You don’t need to knee high … just knee whatever’s in front of you,” Blauer says.

In the end, he gives simple advice for a real-world situation.

“Smash the guy in the fuckin’ face, that’s all.”
