In Roseburg, Ore., parents clamored for a summer program that would entertain their children.
Troy Willis, owner of Cowboy CrossFit, was happy to oblige.
Willis “decided to put on a little kids camp and see how many kids we could get into the community of CrossFit,” he explains.
The fitness camp doesn’t just focus on CrossFit movements but also nutrition, community and academics, Willis says.
Another objective is simply to make children aware “there’s so much out there that’s bigger than they are,” says Laura Bradrick, who coaches at the camp and helps lead CrossFit’s SAT-prep program.
The skills they learn now are ones they can use for the rest of their lives, Bradrick and Willis explain.
“If we teach kids what it’s like to be in a community and how we want to live,” Willis continues, “then they’ll grow up and be that model, hopefully.”
