In the multi-episode “inFlux” series, we see dynamic people using their bodies and minds to meet the challenges of a world in constant motion. Delve a little deeper into their adventures in this bonus content.
In this installment, Points North Heli-Adventures owner Kevin Quinn talks about his CrossFit journey and offers a closer look at the warehouse gym housed at his facility in Cordova, Alaska.
Quinn, who was introduced to CrossFit by Travis Weaver at CrossFit Blizzard in California, has been in Alaska for more than 16 years. He says he realized he needed to make some adjustments to his regimen after a decline in fitness.
“Everybody here, they’re on a vacation. They’re celebrating so it’s standard practice—a guy walks up (and says), ‘Here’s a beer,’” Quinn explains. “We have an 85-day season. You’re gonna have at least 85 beers. I gained 15 or 20 lb.”
After taking control of his health with CrossFit, Quinn says he feels like he’s 20 again.
“I’m not a Games athlete—never will be,” he says, “but I strive to be in the best possible shape I can be in.”
Less-than-optimal flying weather sometimes requires “down days,” which Quinn optimistically acknowledges as “activity days.” When they can’t get airborne to ski or snowboard in the backcountry, those interested can take advantage of the gym at the Points North warehouse.
The site, which used to be a cannery, has various large warehouses perfect for a gym. The Points North team built a mobility center, a weight room and an area for circuit training and plyometric movements. After initially getting creative with kegs, tires and other rugged equipment, Quinn changed direction.
“This last season, just with the interest and how CrossFit is growing so exponentially, I thought, ‘Man, I need to upgrade our gym facility,’” Quinn says.
