Tal Young, owner of CrossFit Spartanburg in South Carolina, opens the doors to his box and shares the story of its success.
“It was more of an experiment than anything, and it actually just blew up. I mean, it was super successful,” he says.
Young and his team of certified trainers work out of a 5,000-square-foot warehouse space.
“It just gives us a lot of room to run around and play in here,” he says.
The warehouse offers some useful features. The high ceilings allow for 15-foot ropes, and the large hanger door comes in handy for accessing the outdoor space. The equipment also includes big tires for flipping, sledgehammer work and jumps. They’ve even fashioned homemade prowlers out of tires.
Young’s close bonds with his fellow coaches allowed him to leave his gym in their hands while he left the country for contract work.
“This is like my second family,” he says. “I just couldn’t ask for a better group of people. They’re the best friends you could have.”
