Join Dave Re, grand master in the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) along with fellow grand master Jake Di Vita, CrossFit Director of Training Dave Castro and PT guru Kelly Starrett as they hone their shooting skills at the Pala Range in California.

“The USPSA is like the shooting version of CrossFit,” says Di Vita. “You never know what’s going to happen at the match.”

Re discusses the current set-up of stages as being very dynamic and requiring you to move, be fast, and “get efficiently in and out of position.” He drills the athletes on techniques for rapid transitions. He and Di Vita coach the athletes through the “easy exit and the hard exit” and the “easy entrance and the hard entrance.”

They discuss how to train and reinforce complex footwork patterns through CrossFit.

“Someone who works on this stuff works on movements that are functional that build, you know, kinesthetic awareness and that build coordination, balance and agility—all of these things, it’s very easy to show them particulars of a thing and have them pick it up very quickly because their body already knows how to do what their mind is telling them to do,” says Re.
