“In Hawaii, the unique thing about it is you’re obviously on an island and limited by the amount of space, warehouse space,” Elyse Umeda says.
The 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games competitor is the owner of CrossFit 808 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Join her on a tour of her box, which opened earlier this year.
Umeda and her coaches worked with the space to find nooks for equipment and the office. She has been accumulating equipment and made sure her gym was equipped with GHD machines from Rogue Fitness, despite the cost of shipping.
The whiteboard-painted wall is one of the newest features of her box. On it, athletes write down their workout tallies and results, as well as their 30-day goals.
“Anyone’s welcome to write on the board and get a little extra coaching from me, just so I know what they’re really trying to achieve in the next 30 days,” she says.
Among her unconventional equipment are homemade slosh tubes used as a training tool. She even has a novelty Shake Weight.
“If you ever rob a movement in our gym, you get put on the Shake Weight,” she says.
Umeda also filled windowpanes by the ceiling with motivational quotes.
“I have always been motivated by quotes,” she says. “I wanted that kind of atmosphere where anywhere someone looked or turned, there’s something motivational on the walls.”
