Missed the 2011 Affiliate Gathering in Big Sky, Mont.? Here are the stories affiliate owners and leaders in the CrossFit community shared with HQ media at the event.
CrossFit founder and CEO Greg Glassman talks about training back at the original CrossFit Santa Cruz.
“We grew this business on that comfort, on those margins that I could make a great six-figure income working from 5 a.m. to 11 five days a week, come in Saturday for half a day and hang out with your friends the rest of the time or write Journal articles or whatever the hell else you want to do,” he says.
Affiliate owners share their success stories and how they first took the plunge to open their own boxes.
CrossFit Gymnastics coach Jeff Tucker describes his experiences as owner of GSX CrossFit.
“Whenever anybody tells me they’re an affiliate owner, I say: ‘Well, you have my congratulations and condolences—your life is changed,’” he says. “There have been days we don’t make money. There are days we do really well, and when we do, we try to put a little in the kitty to either pay some coaches more or we try to get more equipment.”
Tucker continues: “This is my passion, and if you follow your passion, you can’t be wrong.”
Jeri McMaster of CrossFit Hood River in Oregon says, “I don’t think there’s any kind of way to just try to figure out a way to make more money being a gym. It’s just definitely about, you know, creating the most excellent program that you possibly can.”
She concludes: “The money follows, but you really can’t chase the money in this industry. It’s always just been about how to make people better.”
